FAQs

How do I know if I have ADHD?

The best way to tell if you have ADHD is an evaluation. This should include a clinical interview that looks at both childhood and current symptoms, assessments of executive functioning and tests of attention and focus. We also like to include information from teachers, parents, significant others, or others who know you well. The Center can provide you with this type of assessment.

Many of our clients get a significant reimbursement from their insurance including Aetna, Wellpoint, CareFirst BlueCross, Unitedhealth Group, BlueCross BlueShield (Fed and non-fed), GEHA, and others. Some of our client use the Better site for help in getting health care reimbursement.

Do you prescribe medicine?

No. We strongly recommend coordinating with your primary care doctor or psychiatrist because they know you best. We can also refer you to a doctor or psychiatrist who can manage your medications. We also suggest discussing genetic tests with your prescriber to make sure you're getting the best medicine. We suggest using Genesight or Genomind. We will work closely with your doctors to ensure quality care.

What is the best treatment for ADHD?

Current research demonstrates that a combination of medication, education, and support through therapy or coaching is most effective. Neurofeedback is also an emerging effective treatment with lasting results and is an alternative to medications. Your therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that suits your individual goals, needs and comfort level.

What model of therapy do you practice?

We aren't the typical "uh-huh tell me more" kind of therapists because we know that doesn't typically work. Instead we see ourselves as partners and expert mental health providers who will help you get the best out of yourself.
We typically use a two pronged approach to counseling. The first is behavioral counseling to help you focus on the tips, tricks, systems, etc. to get you organized, motivated, and consistent. With competency comes confidence and we want you to get confident quickly. The second is the emotional processing that comes with accepting ourselves for who we are and to stop trying to be "normal" or someone we just aren't. Your process is always normal for you, even when it needs some change.
Counseling sessions are usually 1 time per week for 50 minutes. We can do 90 minute sessions or twice a week if that is warranted. We shy away from less than once a week until about three months of weekly counseling because with less than once a week, the results are not nearly as good.

Do you do coaching?

Yes. We offer a strength-based approach to coaching which focuses on your core values, short and long term goals. Our experience with ADHD allows us to tailor your program to maximize your unique abilities. Often times we warp coaching into counseling so that we can address any emotional blocks to goals and so that clients have the option to use their medical insurance.

Do you offer neurofeedback or biofeedback?

Yes. Neurofeedback is an excellent alternative to medication for ADHD and there have been numerous articles supporting how effective it is for ADHD. There is compelling evidence that neurofeedback is as effective as medications for people with ADHD. The evidence shows that neurofeedback is equal to stimulant medication and the positive results are lasting for people with ADHD. We offer neurofeedback sessions and recommend two sessions per week. We also use HeartMath Institute’s evidence based approach to biofeedback, including their emWave2 software, to help clients reduce their anxiety and feelings of overwhelm. This software tracks your progress over time and has progressively harder settings to ensure you are learning at the right level.

Do you offer alternative treatments instead of medication?

Yes. We offer neurofeedback, which the evidence shows is as good as medication for treating ADHD. It is also effective for symptoms of depression, anxiety, traumatics stress, sleep disturbances, and many other issues. We offer therapist guided one hour sessions and recommend two sessions per week to get the best results.

How do you work with outside psychiatrists?

Yes. We employ an open approach to treatment. With your permission, we are open to talking with outside doctors and school officials.

Does therapy work?

Absolutely! Countless studies have shown that therapy works. What really makes therapy work is the therapist’s ability to connect with the client by providing a safe environment for self exploration. Additionally, when a therapist and a client create clear goals and steps to achieve them. At the Center we use a few models for goal setting to help you succeed and we are known for creating safe environments for therapy.
