Our Free 15-Minute Consultation For Mental Health Care In DC

A free mental health consultation in Washington, DC might seem like a small thing, but it can change the entire trajectory of someone’s mental health journey. When you’re already questioning whether you can afford therapy, if someone takes your insurance or not, or wondering if your struggles are “serious enough” to warrant professional help, knowing your first call to us is free matters more than you might think.

Many can relate to this scenario. You’ve googled “ADHD testing DC” at 2 AM, wondering if your struggles are actually symptoms. You’ve filled out online mental health quizzes, or started contact forms on therapist websites only to close the browser before hitting submit.

Your first conversation with a mental health provider sets the tone for everything that follows. It should feel like a conversation with someone who genuinely cares about understanding your unique situation—not a sales pitch or rushed screening.

At The DC Center for Neurocognitive Excellence (DCNE), we believe this first conversation should always be free, thorough, and focused entirely on you. Our free mental health consultation in DC, Baltimore and Virginia isn’t just about saving you money, it’s about ensuring that cost never becomes the reason someone doesn’t get the guidance they need to move forward.

“Giving Back”: The Heart Behind DCNE’s Mental Health Free Consultation Approach

There’s a deeper purpose behind our free 15-minute consultation.

It reflects DCNE’s core value of giving back to our community. As mental health providers, we’ve received years of education and training to develop our expertise. We believe in sharing that knowledge to help people navigate their mental health journey.

We understand the courage it takes to reach out for mental health support. That’s why every member of our team—from administrative staff to our clinical director—provides these consultations at no cost.

We’re here to listen, guide, and help you understand your options, whether you ultimately work with us or not. These consultations are our investment in our Washington DC, Baltimore and Virginia community’s mental health—honoring the trust you place in us when you take that first step.

What Makes DCNE’s Free Consultation Process Different from Other DMV Practices

Always Free: We provide this service at no cost for every service we offer—ADHD assessments, comprehensive evaluations, counseling, EMDR therapy, and neurofeedback.

Same-Week Availability: Typically you can get a consultation appointment within the same week you reach out. No weeks-long waiting periods.

Easy Online Scheduling: Schedule your free consultation directly through our website using our SavvyCal system. No phone tag required.

HIPAA-Compliant from Day One: We invest in proper, secure communication systems, including HIPAA-compliant text messaging and Hushmail contact form for secure email communication. Your privacy matters from the very first interaction.

Unfortunately, other practices don’t offer secure contact forms. Be cautious if you’re emailing a provider whose email address is, for example, @gmail or @aol – those aren’t HIPAA compliant. That’s exactly why we made a HIPAA compliant investment even, in our free services, to ensure your personal information stays protected throughout our entire process.

The DCNE Consultation: A Thorough, Four-Part Process

Our consultations aren’t rushed conversations. We’ve developed a thorough, research-backed process with four distinct parts:

1. Greeting and Agenda Setting: We start every consultation by introducing ourselves by name, explaining who will be conducting your consultation, outlining what we’ll cover, and letting you know how long it will take.

We believe in transparency from the start.

2. Listening and Engaging: We want to hear about you first. What brings you to us? What are your mental health goals?

This isn’t a sales pitch—it’s a conversation. This approach builds genuine rapport and ensures we truly understand your needs.

3. Detailed Service Explanation: Once we understand your situation, we provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant services. We also send you a comprehensive email follow up with all the aspects of the consultation and services you’re interested in. This saves you the hassle of trying to remember it all – including our prices – during the consultation itself.

For example, if you’re interested in an ADHD assessment, we’ll walk you through all four components: the gold-standard questionnaires our testing therapists administer, the computer-based continuous performance test, the questionnaire for someone who knows you well, and the semi-structured clinical interview.

At this point, we always pause to answer questions before moving to logistics.

4. Logistics and Next Steps: We discuss scheduling, insurance considerations, and provide you with specific information to help you work with your insurance company. In other words, we want to add value to your mental health regardless if you work with us or not.

The DCNE Difference in Expert-Matched Consultations

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all consultations. We carefully match you with the right clinician from the start.

Our experienced administrative staff conducts consultations for ADHD assessments, counseling, and EMDR therapy, and they’re thoroughly trained in these services and can provide detailed guidance.

For Complex Cases, We Match You with Specialized Knowledge:

For comprehensive evaluations, our doctoral-level psychologist Dr. Lauren Horton conducts the consultation personally. Why? Because these assessments involve complex technical considerations.

She needs to understand whether you actually need a comprehensive evaluation or if a standard ADHD assessment would better serve your needs. This is one way we save you money and effort. If you don’t need the most expensive and time consuming assessment, Dr. Horton or our Administrative Staff will let you know. Dr. Horton can also tease out important diagnostic questions—like distinguishing between ADHD and autism spectrum considerations—ensuring you get exactly the right type of assessment.

Specialized Services Get Specialized Attention:

For neurofeedback consultations, our clinical Director Schuyler Cunningham – who is Board Certified in Neurofeedback – handles these personally due to the highly specialized nature of qEEG-guided neurofeedback. The technical details matter, and his expertise ensures you get accurate information about this advanced treatment option.

This isn’t about forcing you through our process, it’s about ensuring you’re directed to the right treatment with the right provider to match your needs. We take these consultations seriously because getting the right guidance from the start can make all the difference in your mental health journey.

HIPAA Compliance and Detailed Follow-Up Post Consultation

Your consultation doesn’t end when we hang up the phone. We send every prospective client a detailed follow-up email summarizing everything we discussed—because we know many people seeking mental health support may have anxiety during the consultation but don’t want to tell us. We don’t want you stressed about taking notes during our conversation.

These follow-up emails include specific insurance information, such as: “What are my mental health benefits for out-of-network mental health services for neurofeedback (CPT code 90876 and 90901)?” We provide you with the exact language to use with your insurance company, making the reimbursement process as straightforward as possible.

We even send detailed instructions for practical matters, like how to access our building on K Street, because we want to eliminate every possible barrier to getting the help you need. And since we understand that focusing and note-taking during consultations can be challenging when you’re already feeling overwhelmed, we make sure you have everything in writing.
