Autism Testing Washington, DC

More people are being diagnosed with autism today, and that is a sign of progress, not something to be alarmed by. It reflects better screening, broader diagnostic understanding, and less stigma around seeking an evaluation in the first place, not autism suddenly becoming more common, and the data backs it up (more on that below).

At the Center for Neurocognitive Excellence (DCNE), autism testing is built around a comprehensive set of psychological tests, including the ADOS-2, administered only by clinicians who hold ADOS-2 certification. Testing is offered at our K Street office in downtown Washington, DC, and we welcome clients from Maryland and Virginia as well. Parts of the evaluation, including intake and feedback sessions, are available virtually for families throughout the DMV.

What Is Autism Testing?

Autism testing, also called an autism diagnostic evaluation or autism assessment, is the process of determining whether someone meets criteria for autism spectrum disorder. At DCNE, this is built around the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), a structured series of interactive tasks that let a certified examiner directly observe social communication, interaction style, and behavior patterns in real time. It is not a questionnaire filled out alone at home. It is a live, interactive process, paired with developmental history, other gold standard psychological tests, and, if indicated, input from people who know you or your child well.

Why It Matters: Certified vs. Uncertified Administration

The ADOS-2 is widely regarded as the gold standard for observational autism assessment, and that reputation depends on certified administration. An examiner who is certified in the ADOS-2 and administers it regularly is working from the same standardized criteria every trained clinician uses. Subtle presentations, especially in adults, women, and others who have learned to mask autistic traits over time, are more likely to be missed by evaluators without that specific training.

8-year-olds across 16 U.S. communities were identified with autism in 2022, up from 1 in 36 just two years earlier. Rates vary by region, reflecting differences in screening and reporting, not where a child lives.

What to Expect from Autism Testing at DCNE

(Our specific approach may vary in each case)

1. Intake and Developmental History

Before any direct testing happens, we gather a full picture. This includes a conversation about your history, current concerns, and goals, whether the person being tested is you, a family member, or your child, along with input from others who know that history well, such as a parent, partner, teacher, or caregiver. This part of the process may be completed virtually for clients across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

2. The ADOS-2 Observation and associated Psychological Tests

This is the core of the evaluation, and it requires an in-person visit to our Washington, DC office. The ADOS-2 depends on direct, in-person interaction between you and the examiner, so this part cannot be done remotely. Sessions involve a series of structured activities and conversations designed to bring out social communication patterns naturally. Other psychological tests will likely be included as well to provide a fuller picture.

3. Feedback and Written Report

Once testing is complete, we meet with you to walk through the results and what they mean, in plain language, not just clinical terminology. You will also receive a full written report you can use for school accommodations, workplace support, insurance documentation, or simply your own clarity. This feedback session is available virtually.

Is Autism Testing Right for You?

Autism testing may be worth considering if you or your child:

• Have longstanding social or communication patterns that feel different from peers, even if you cannot quite name why
• Have been evaluated for ADHD, anxiety, or another condition, but something about the picture still feels incomplete
• Experience strong sensory sensitivities, intense focused interests, or a deep need for routine and predictability
• Have been told by a teacher, doctor, partner, or friend that an autism evaluation might be worth pursuing
• Want a clear, documented answer rather than continuing to guess

Not sure if it is the right next step? That is exactly why we offer a free consultation before you commit to anything. Our team will listen, answer your questions honestly, and help you figure out whether autism testing is the right fit for you.

Why Choose DCNE for Autism Testing

Over a Decade of Rigorous Testing in DC

DCNE has spent more than ten years building and refining psychological testing services in Washington, DC, long before autism testing was added to that list. That history means our intake process, report standards, and clinical follow-through are already proven, not built from scratch for this new service.

Multiple Informants, Fewer Missed Diagnoses

We do not rely on a single conversation or a single observer. Gathering input from parents, partners, teachers, and caregivers alongside direct ADOS-2 observation gives a fuller picture, and it is exactly the kind of thoroughness that catches presentations a single-source evaluation can miss. Some clients prefer we don't reach out for that secondary input, and that is completely fine. We have worked with that preference many times as well.

A Complete Package

Autism testing at DCNE is not an isolated transaction. Whatever your results show, our team is already in a position to talk through next steps with you, in coordination with your other providers when needed. We have treatment options for you including counseling, EMDR, and neurofeedback.
